Shape of Product Org
Shape of Product Org
Traditionally, the context required to make a product decision was split across 3 people:
- Designer: held the user experience context.
- PM: held the customer, business, and prioritization context.
- Engineer: held the implementation and platform context.
Each person had a piece of the product. Coordination was the price you paid to combine those pieces into 1 shipping decision.
But increasingly, Product has become less of a function and more of a system for bringing context together.
The customer is no longer just Product’s context to own. Design, Marketing, and Support are often closer to the customer, while Engineering, Sales, and Business bring deeper execution and commercial context.
Product sits in the middle, connecting these perspectives and turning them into coherent decisions, so functions no longer operate in the silos they once did.
